Tax season is again upon us.

Although Collins Financial Consulting originally focused on retirement assessments those assessments resulted the preparation and electronic filing of clients income tax returns.

The number of returns filed increased consistently over the years until I decided to scale back

Year        Number of tax returns filed

     2008                          1

     2009                          3

     2010                        18

     2011                        28

     2012                        47

     2013                      125

     2014                      171

     2015                      193

     2016                      227

     2017                      207

     2018                      221

     2019                      201

     2020                      192

     2021                      161

     2022                      146

Of perhaps equal importance is that beginning in 2012 I identified a number of oversights of previous years returns. The refiling of seven client's returns - in some cases back to 2002 resulted in refunds due to

  • splitting of pension income,
  • a advantageous reallocation between spouses of charitable donations,
  • medical non-refundable tax credits,
  • pension non-refundable tax credits,
  • the transfer of the age non-refundable tax credit, and
  • a Nova Scotia graduate retention tax reduction

From these re filings these clients received additional tax refunds.  Each year since additional clients have also received money back.  Amounts have totaled,

  • $12,704 in 2012
  • $39,195 in 2013
  • $15,341 in 2014
  • $  4,451 in 2015
  • $         0  in 2016
  • $12,778 in 2017, and
  • $  7,576 in 2018

bringing the total to $92,045.

I offer no guarantees anything on your return has been overlooked, but there are $ out there.
